Studio-T now uses the latest LIDAR 3D scanning technology to analyze existing buildings ; increasing the fidelity of drawings and designs . This allows us to save time and get straight to what really matters , spending time on our clients designs !
How does it work ?
LIDAR (light detection and ranging) utilizes laser light that is emitted from a source which bounces off objects. This source may be hand held , mounted on a vehicle or equipped on a drone or plane that flies overhead. The time taken for this laser light to bounce back is measured and used to calculate the distance of the object away from the source. The scanning equipment typically uses combination of gyroscopes and GPS to keep track of its position in relation to these measurements. Highly sophisticated 3D scanning equipment can take hundreds and even thousands of these super precise laser measurements every second , enabling complex spaces to be mapped out and measured in minutes !
Using this raw data of thousands of measurements which are represented as coloured points in space (also referred to as a point cloud) architects and designers can create the geometry of existing real world objects with greater ease than ever before. This can aid the creation of construction drawings , 3D visualizations, the creation of 3D models for BIM (Building Information Modelling) and 'Digital twins' which are digital representations of real world buildings that dynamically reflect their use in real-time.
How 3D scanning aids design ? Seeing the big picture.
This new technology enables designers to quickly get a sense of the size and scale of existing spaces and really hone in on opportunities for better space utilization. Very quickly new ideas and design iterations can be tested against real-world models.
It also can provide a quick and easy way to accurately measure floor areas , which is useful for assessing the value of a property or determining the future value or building cost of an alteration .
useful apps for lidar scanning.
If you are a designer and want to try 3D scanning out yourself and have an IOS device that has a LIDAR sensor , i.e an iPhone 12 pro and older or a 2020 iPad and older , check out these useful apps that I would recommend.
3D Scanner App
A very useful 3D scanning app , with lots of neat options to really fine tune the results of your scan.
Polycam
A versatile 3D scanning app that is really simple and easy to use with a slick interface.
ROOMSCAN-LIDAR
An all in one kind of app that can generate floor plans and integrate point cloud information as well as allows you to place furniture , take photos and add notes all in the app.
Do not get obsolete like an old technology , keep innovating yourself
